It’s worrying how far removed we are from the source of our food says JENNIFER SELWAY

IN Miami I drove along Ocean Drive past the house where fashion designer Gianni Versace lived and was shot dead by Andrew Cunanan in 1997.

It’s now a hotel but its notoriety lives on and there was a bunch of people taking photographs.

A local told me: “You know why the bloodstains were so hard to get rid of? The steps were made of limestone and the blood just seeped in”.

BBC Two’s The Assassination Of Gianni Versace ends next week and has been less about Versace and more about his nemesis, the serial killer Andrew Cunanan.

What an amazing performance from Darren Criss.

I can’t wait to see what else this young actor is in.

But it’s hard to imagine him playing a goodie.

Assassination of Gianni Versace: Darren Criss drama sparks meltdown with horrific twist

The series, currently airing on BBC Two, has had viewers gripped for five episodes but tonight it seemed some struggled to watch the harrowing scenes.

Fans will remember that last week’s instalment saw psychopath Andrew (played by Darren Criss) kill both Jeffrey (Finn Wittrock) and David Madson (Cody Fern).

But tonight’s episode drew everything together with the backstory on Jeff and his tough time suffering as a gay man in the US Navy.

What’s more, the story is all the more heartbreaking because Andrew hadn’t acted on his murderous tendencies until he reached the end of his tether with his first love.

Yet what really shocked viewers was the tragic truth of Jeff’s treatment in the military.

Hiding his own sexuality, Jeff was forced to witness another gay colleague get badly beaten but he managed to save him just in time.

It meant that Jeff was outed however, and as his own pain became too hard to deal with, the character tried to commit suicide.

Unable to go through with it, it appeared that Andrew was his saviour when they met in a local gay bar.

After striking up a conversation, Andrew helped Jeff through his struggles in the Navy but he couldn’t have been prepared for what was to come from their new friendship.

Viewers were more concerned with the difficult scenes in tonight’s episode, as some claimed they were too much to watch.

Taking to Twitter, fans came together to share their feelings.

One person wrote: “This behaviour was only 23 years ago. Dear god. x #ACSVersace.”

“Oh s**t no no no no #ACSVersace,” another shocked fan said.

A third agreed: “This is so awful and heartbreaking #ACSVersace.”

While a fourth shared: “I can’t watch! All this violence and murder and for some reason him cutting his tattoo off is a step too far for me #TheAssassinationOfGianniVersace #ACSVersace.”

Fans continued to lament over the character’s heart-wrenching story, as one said: “Jeff’s story is honestly heartbreaking and he deserved better from life. #ACSVersace.”

“Poor Jeff. Poor anyone being treated like this #ACSVersace,” another upset fan wrote.

Meanwhile viewers continued to praise the show’s writers as one person added: “American Crime Story is absolutely brilliant. Oh and @FinnWittrock is amazing #ACSVersace.”

American Crime Story: Assassination of Gianni Versace fans baffled for VERY bizarre reason

The FX series is based on the harrowing real life events that saw the Italian clothing designer shot dead by sociopath Andrew Cunanan.

The 28-year-old serial killer murdered at least five people during a three month period in 1997, with the first episode depicting the exact moment he killed Gianni on the doorstep of his own home.

The series, written by American Horror Story’s Ryan Murphy, gripped fans with its intense music and actor Darren Criss’ gripping portrayal of Andrew.

Yet it was Penelope Cruz’s portrayal of Gianni’s sister Donatella Versace that left fans struggling to keep up with the storyline.

Taking to Twitter, one person said: “I honestly can’t understand what Donatella is saying, is it just me? #ACSVersace.”

Another wrote: “Why has Donatella got a Spanish accent, I mean I know why, but why? #ACSVersace.”

“Is it me or does Penelope’s accent sound a bit off #ACSVersace,” a third agreed.

While a fourth queried: “Were there no Italian actresses available? #ACSVersace #AmericanCrimeStory #Versace.”

Confused with the show, more viewers complained about other accents in the series.

“I love Edgar Ramirez but his accent really doesn’t sound Italian lmao #ACSVersace,” one fan said.

Other viewers were left in awe at the first part of the drama, convinced that Darren and Penelope’s acting would win them numerous the television awards.

“@tomrobsmith really loved the first episode. superb cast. Penelope totally owning that part. congratulations! #ACSVersace,” one person praised.

Another shared: “I’m sure Donatella doesn’t have a Spanish accent. Good drama though.

The episode ended after 50 minutes, which was incredibly unusual for the Broadcasting Channel.

Some fans were disappointed that they had to wait a whole week for the next episode, as one wrote: “Can’t believe I have to wait until WEDNESDAY for another episode, why BBC, why??”
