If you’ve been keeping up with the hit show The Murder of Gianni Versacé: American Crime Story on FX, then this tutorial is for you, darling.
But even if you haven’t followed the limited series, there’s something magical and glamorous about the world of Versacé. It’s a celebrity favorite fashion house (Lady Gaga and J.Lo are huge fans), the clothes are both opulent and gaudy, and it’s just one of those brands that has cultivated a cult following.
While the FX show follows Gianni’s life leading up to his untimely death in 1997, we can’t help but be charmed by the late fashion designer’s sister, Donatella. Penélope Cruz, who plays the fashion mogul, not only draws you in with Donatella’s sense of effortless style, but she makes her presence known.
Donatella’s fashion and signature makeup have stood the test of time, which is why I wanted to recreate her iconic smoky eye and super nude lips. Let’s get started on this Donatella makeup tutorial, so you have time to get all dolled up for the show’s season finale, which is tonight (March 21st).

Did Gianni Versace actually admit he was gay to “The Advocate?” Yes, and it’s something Ryan Murphy greatly admires
Throughout this season of American Crime Story, Ryan Murphy and FX have often been forced to use their imagination. As many of the real people depicted in the series are dead and the victims’ families have largely kept quiet, The Assassination of Gianni Versace has often had to take creative liberties when recreating the narrative. Using a plethora of source material, from Maureen Orth’s Vulgar Favors to newspaper articles and FBI reports, FX has had to imagine interactions between Andrew Cunanan and his victims — and even depict events never confirmed by the victims’ families.
In the opening moments of the fifth episode “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell,” Gianni (Édgar Ramírez) tells his sister Donatella (Penelope Cruz) that, much to her chagrin, he’s going to publicly disclose his sexuality to The Advocate. Donatella derides Gianni’s decision and tries to dissuade him, concerned that coming out as gay could put their company in jeopardy but Gianni remains steadfast in his decision.
In a moving moment during “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell, Gianni interrupts his own interview with the Advocate to introduce his longtime partner Antonio D’Amico (Ricky Martin) to his profiler, Brendan Lemon, revealing that they’ve been together for 13 years. Often publicly relegated to the position of Gianni’s assistant, Antonio is visibly moved.
While Gianni’s decision to publicly come out was a big deal in and of itself, it had a lasting effect on him. During the Television Critics Association tour last summer, Murphy opened up about what Gianni coming out in the Advocate interview meant to him and what it was like to film the interview.
“I admired that and always did,” Murphy said. “I loved him and looked up to him, and was so proud and excited when he did that interview in the Advocate. At that time there weren’t a lot of people brave enough to live their lives in the open. So for me, I had a great passion for it, and I was very emotional shooting it.“
The scene was incredibly moving, especially interwoven with Jeff Trail’s (Finn Wittrock) anonymous CBS interview regarding being gay in the military, reminding viewers that while Gianni Versace was able to live a proud life as a gay man, many others were forced to remain in the closet for the sake of their lives.
The most disturbing thing about the latest “American Crime Story” is that Lee Miglin’s house is just completely barren
Never in a million years did I ever expect American Crime Story: Versace to do a bottle episode, but it’s happened. The latest episode of the series, “A Random Killing,” takes us back in time a few months before Andrew Cunanan made his way to Miami and murdered Gianni Versace on the front steps of his apartment. In this episode, we find ourselves in Chicago, and meet Cunanan’s third victim, Lee Miglin.
Cunanan murdered Miglin in May of 1997, and did so in a very brutal way — the American Crime Story episode shows us that Cunanan bound Miglin’s head with tape, just like we saw him do int he second episode. He also stabbed Miglin repeatedly, dropped a bag of concrete on his chest, and then possibly ate him?? It is hella disturbing, and also incredibly sad, as prior to this murder watched Miglin share a few touching moments with his wife, Marilyn (who at the time, and still does, own a cosmetic company sold on HSN).
The murder is hard to watch, and TBH I had to look away a few times because Cunanan is a LOT to handle. But even more so that watching this brutal murder, I can’t shake the fact that the Miglins have literally nothing in their house. Like, nothing.
I’m not exaggerating when I say their townhouse in Chicago is just completely barren. The scenes we’ve seen in Miami are all done in shades of pink and orange — because, those are SUCH Miami colors — for some reason the Miglin’s is ALL WHITE. It’s honestly too white. And where there are pops of color, they’re few and far between. It makes me uncomfortable that there are only three things on the Miglin’s mantle.

There only thing in their bedroom is a *white* picture in a *white* frame.

The carpet is white, the hallway runner is white (Marilyn’s suitcases are white!!) and I would spend 10 minute sin this house before I spilled spaghetti sauce everywhere.

Unfortunately, I could not locate any pictures of the interior of the Miglin which means we’ll never know if this all white decor is real, or created for the show.
As for what else is real and/or created for the show? The Miglins steadfast denies that Lee knew Cunanan before the murder, and that it was a completely random act of violence, so what we see in the episode is mostly dramatized — maybe including the TOO WHITE decor.
