Watch Scenes From ‘The Assassination of Gianni Versace’ Emmy Nominee Ricky Martin’s Acting Career

Ricky Martin is nominated for an Emmy Award for his supporting role as Gianni Versace’ longtime partner Antonio D’Amico in American Crime Story’s The Assassination of Gianni Versace. With a worn-down frown, dispirited eyes and an Italian lilt, the Latin pop star transforms himself into the suffering D’Amico to such an extent that viewers may have to look for the cleft in his chin to be sure it is him.

In recent interviews, Martin has said that when acting the part, he unearthed feelings from “the most uncomfortable and saddest part of my life.” That was before he came out in 2010, when his image as the ever-smiling and sassy Latin lover whose bilingual pop songs and “bon bon” shaking dance moves detonated the “Latin pop explosion.” He has said that being “locked in the closet” was his longest-playing real-life acting role.

A Latin superstar today, Martin became a regular onstage performer at age 12, when he joined the Puerto rican pre-teen hysteria machine Menudo. After graduating from the boy band, he started a solo career that would make him a global pop sensation. And over the years, he acted in movies, TV and on Broadway, before hitting the top of his game – so far – as an actor in The Assassination of Gianni Versace.

Take a look at 6 memorable moments from Ricky Martin’s acting career.

Too Much Love for Versace?

Question: I was happy for The Americans to be recognized for all-around effort, though I still hated the finale. Also, Darren Criss certainly deserved it for playing Andrew Cunanan in The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story, but Penelope Cruz and (worse yet) Ricky Martin for supporting roles in the limited series category—they were hardly in it—prove once again that there are too many categories. — JV

Matt Roush: There may be too many Emmy categories, but rewarding deserving supporting players in limited series/movies aren’t part of the problem. And in this case, I’d have to disagree. Cruz as Donatella made quite an impression (though I’m rooting for either Judith Light, also from Versace, or Meritt Wever in Godless), and Ricky Martin’s portrayal of Versace’s widowed mate was poignant even in just his few scenes, which is why the supporting category exists. (In that category, I’m expecting Jeff Daniels to win as the villain of Godless, although Ramirez as Versace and especially Finn Wittrock as the closeted military man in Versace were also strong.)

Emmy Nominations 2018: Netflix Beats HBO For The First Time

Nominations for the 70th annual Emmy Awards were announced today. The list of nominees are varied with some standby shows and some love for some newer or freshman shows. Netflix beat HBO for the first time in the streaming service’s history with 112 nominations this year which is up from their 91 nominations last year. However, HBO’s Game of Thrones led the field of shows with 22 nominations overall followed by NBC’s SNL and HBO’s Westworld with 21 nominations and Hulu’s The Handmaid’s tale receiving 20 nominations. As for freshman series, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel received 14 nominations and HBO’s Barry received 13 nominations. Some surprises included no acting nominations for Game of Thrones in any of the Lead categories, Twin Peaks not being nominated for Best Limited Series, YouTube Red’s Cobra Kai only getting one nomination, and NBC’s The Good Place being shut out in the Comedy categories. | 12 July 2018
