Emmys 2018: Predictions and Proclamations, Nominations Edition
Limited Series
The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story (FX)
Godless (Netflix)
Howards End (Starz)
The Looming Tower (Hulu)
Twin Peaks: The Return (Showtime)The first four slots more or less in hand, the wild card here, to my mind, is Godlessâa star-studded Western that would seem to scratch the TV Academyâs every itch, yet premiered last fall to relatively little fanfare and hasnât had a major âFor Your Considerationâ push from the streaming giant, that I can tell. Iâm going to stick with it here, but onyl by a nose: It could easily be leapfrogged by Showtimeâs Patrick Melrose, with Emmy golden boy Benedict Cumberbatch, or even Genius: Picasso, with Antonio Banderas as the famed artist.
Lead Actor (Limited Series/TV Movie)
Benedict Cumberbatch, Patrick Melrose (Showtime)
Darren Criss, The Assassination of Gianni Versace (FX)
Jeff Daniels, The Looming Tower (Hulu)
Michael B. Jordan, Fahrenheit 451 (HBO)
Kyle MacLachlan, Twin Peaks: The Return (Showtime)
Al Pacino, Paterno (HBO)Whew! This category has some big names! Which is how I arrived at a list that doesnât include Antonio Banderas as Pablo Picasso in Genius (for which Geoffrey Rush nabbed a nomination last year). The only non-supernova on here is Criss, and his frightening, magnetic performance as spree killer Andrew Cunanan in The Assassination of Gianni Versace might be the cream of the crop. (MacLachlanâs multi-character turn in Twin Peaks is sure to give him a run for his money.) I suppose itâs theoretically possible for Danielsâ supporting campaign for Godless to knock him out and allow Banderas to slip in, but Iâm not gonna bet the house on it.
Supporting Actor (Limited Series/TV Movie)
Jeff Daniels, Godless (Netflix)
Ricky Martin, The Assassination of Gianni Versace (FX)
Edgar Ramirez, The Assassination of Gianni Versace (FX)
Michael Shannon, Fahrenheit 451 (HBO)
Michael Stuhlbarg, The Looming Tower (Hulu)
Peter Sarsgaard, The Looming Tower (Hulu)Along with Lead Actor (Drama), this is the list that reflects the biggest shift from my own preferences: Only Ramirez, as a very convincing Gianni Versace, appears on both. I suppose I canât complain if Michael Shannon or Michael Stuhlbarg(the stalwart character actors of the decade, for my money) win an Emmy, but this category is the ultimate consequence of Emmy votersâ traditional inability to reach deep. Tahar Rahim (The Looming Tower), Alex Lawther (Howards End), Cody Fern and Finn Wittrock (The Assassination of Gianni Versace) are the lesser-known names that immediately come to mind as more deserving than most of the mailed-in performances listed above, but Iâm just one lowly, increasingly-despondent-as-this-story-goes-on TV critic.
Outstanding Supporting Actress (Limited Series/TV Movie)
Penelope Cruz, The Assassination Of Gianni Versace (FX)
Laura Dern, Twin Peaks: The Return (Showtime)
Nicole Kidman, Top of the Lake: China Girl (Sundance TV)
Angela Lansbury, Little Women (PBS)
Judith Light, The Assassination Of Gianni Versace (FX)
Merritt Wever, Godless (Netflix)If my predictions hold, Iâll be thoroughly sad not to see Anna Paquinâs terrifying performance in Alias Grace, or Tracey Ullmannâs devilishly funny one in Howards End, go unacknowledged. But the list above is basically the gay TV criticâs dream field, so: I know when to hold my tongue.
Emmys 2018: Predictions and Proclamations, Nominations Edition
Penelope Cruz (âAssassination of Gianni Versaceâ) is the Emmy front-runner, but Experts name 5 women who could beat her
The Emmy nominations will be announced on Thursday, July 12, and Penelope Cruz (âThe Assassination of Gianni Versaceâ) maintains her lead in our Emmy predictions for Best Movie/Mini Supporting Actress, but she shouldnât get too comfortable. This is one of the most divided races at this yearâs awards, according to our Experts, who point to five women who could overtake her.
As of this writing 10 of the 18 Expert journalists weâve polled from top media outlets are predicting a victory for Cruz: Eric Deggans (NPR), Joyce Eng (Gold Derby), Pete Hammond (Deadline Hollywood), Chris Harnick (E!), Matthew Jacobs (Huffington Post), Lynette Rice (Entertainment Weekly), Robert Rorke(New York Post), Anne Thompson (IndieWire), Peter Travers (Rolling Stone) and Adnan Virk (ESPN).
Cruz has never been nominated for an Emmy before, but sheâs an Oscar winning movie star and Emmy voters often love those. She also plays a recognizable real-life figure, fashion designer Donatella Versace, which required the Spanish actress to speak English with an Italian accent. But itâs far from an open-and-shut case.
Two Experts say the Emmy will go to Laura Dern (âTwin Peaks: The Returnâ): Lynn Elber (Associated Press) and Glenn Whipp (LA Times). Dern just won this award last year for âBig Little Lies,â and voters will also be watching her this year in the telefilm âThe Tale,â for which sheâs the front-runner for Best Movie/Mini Actress. All that plus her recent role in âStar Wars: The Last Jediâ has made her a Hollywood darling in the last 12 months.
Another two Experts are predicting Nicole Kidman (âTop of the Lake: China Girlâ): Debra Birnbaum (Variety) and Ken Tucker (Yahoo). Like Dern, Kidman was an Emmy winner last year for âBig Little Liesâ (Best Limited Series and Best Movie/Mini Actress), so she too is on a hot streak.
Two more Experts are betting on Angela Lansbury (âLittle Womenâ): Tom OâNeil(Gold Derby) and Matt Roush (TV Guide Magazine). Lansbury is long, long, long overdue with no wins out of a whopping 18 past nominations. In a divided field, voters might decide itâs a good time to finally reward the 92-year-old acting legend.
Debbie Day (Rotten Tomatoes) is going out on a limb for Cruzâs âAssassinationâ co-star Judith Light. Sheâs a two-time Daytime Emmy winner for her role on âOne Life to Liveâ (1980-1981) but she has never won in primetime despite three past nominations.
And our last Expert, Ben Travers (IndieWire) thinks Merritt Wever (âGodlessâ) will surprise. It wouldnât be the first time. Wever was an upset Emmy winner in 2013 for Best Comedy Supporting Actress for âNurse Jackie.â
