American Crime Story fans shocked Versace’s funeral music is Vicar Of Dibley tune

Viewers noticed that the music to accompany one of the most emotional scenes in the series – where Andrew Cunanan can be seen mouthing the lyrics as he watches the service on TV while in hiding – was the same as the famous soundtrack to the British sitcom.

Fans took to Twitter to ponder why the piece of classical music had been chosen for, what was intended to be, a very sad moment in the series.

One wrote: “Good idea to stick on #TheVicarOfDibley at Versace’s funeral, cheer things up a bit. #AmericanCrimeStory.”

Another commented: “He was a fan of The Vicar Of Dibley? #AmericanCrimeStory

A third shared: “who knew the versaces were such big vicar of dibley fans #ACSVersace.”

However, the piece of music is in fact very famous in its own right.

It is known as The Lord Is My Shepherd or Psalm 23, and it was originally written around 1000BC.

One viewer correctly identified it: “That glorious rendition of Psalm 23 with the sick killer Andrew Cunanan watching on was TV genius.#ACSVersace #AmericanCrimeStory #gianniversace#andrewcunanan #assassinationofgianniversace

The final episode of the series saw a dramatic end as Andrew Cunanan, played by Darren Criss, kills himself with a gun as he is corned by police in the Miami house boat he is hiding in.

In a flashback scene that follows, Gianni refuses to take him on as an apprentice and swerves his kiss.

One fan wrote about the tragic end to the episode: “I know he was mad, bad, narcissist, evil killer but can’t help feeling sad for him.”

On the performance of actor Darren Criss, another commented: “Anyone not watching #ACSVersace is missing one of the TV events of recent years: @DarrenCriss is utterly extraordinary.”

The TV show told the story of Gianni’s murder on 15 July 1997, at the age of 50, on the steps of his Miami Beach mansion.

It showed his killer Andrew, who had already murdered four men in the US, go on the run.

Nine days later he committed suicide, as the series shows, on a house boat, and took with him any clues as to why he did what he did.

The famous Italian’s funeral was held in Milan Cathedral and attended by over 2,000 people including Princess Diana and Elton John.

He was cremated and his ashes returned to the family’s estate near Cernobbio, Italy.

I hope the Queen gave bum’s rush to idiots for Windrush debacle

My Glee for Daz

I AM obsessed with the latest American Crime Story series about the assassination of fashion designer Gianni Versace.

Once I got over Versace – actor Edgar Ramirez – looking like chef Antony Worrall Thompson and those comedy false teeth affected by Penelope Cruz as his sister Donatella, I was able to sit back and be enthralled by the performance of Darren Criss as serial killer Andrew Cunanan.

It’s an astonishing acting tour de force and light years away from his wholesome role in Glee, where he played Kurt Hummel’s love interest.

Darren is the triple threat. He can sing and dance, as he proved in Glee, and also in his one-man shows – but boy, can this man act up a storm. He should be clearing a space on his mantelpiece right now to accommodate all of the awards that must surely be coming his way.

In the final episode, to be aired next week, he almost makes us feel sorry for the monster that was Cunanan – and that takes the very greatest of acting talent.

American Crime Story fans ‘traumatised’ at most ‘grisly’ scenes ever seen on TV as Andrew Cunanan claims another two victims

AMERICAN Crime story viewers declared scenes in tonight’s episode some of the most “grisly” and “horrifying"they’d ever seen on TV.

The drama, which follows the crimes of Gianni Versace serial killer Andrew Cunanan tonight showed the stomach-churning beginning of his killing spree.

The episode saw Cunanan (Darren Criss) hammer to death his first victim – his friend Jeffrey Trail – in front of lover David Madson before rolling his bloodied body up in a rug.

One horrified fan tweeted: "Wow, that was such a tense and horrifying episode… I don’t sleep well on Wednesday nights.”

Another wrote: “That whole ep was absolutely terrifying,” while a third added: “Not sure I can handle this anymore, my nerves are shredded.

A fourth tweeted: "Shellshocked. That was both brilliantly directed and perhaps the most horrid, grisly thing I’ve seen.”

Ricky Martin praised for his acting in The Assassination of Gianni Versace

In the first episode, Ricky’s Antonio took on a major role in the show, as he was quizzed about his relationship with Gianni, including their sexual relationship, while he is covered in his blood.

Antonion is also seen having a frosty relationship with his sister, Donatella.

Known for his catchy pop hits, including She Bangs and Livin’ La Vida Loca, the dramatic turn was a surprise welcomed by fans, who praised him for his portrayal of the grieving lover.

“Wow. #AmericanCrimeStory had a great first episode and really set the tone. And who knew Ricky Martin could act?! #GianniVersace #90sforever” wrote one fan.

Another wrote: “Ricky Martin is frigging AMAZING in #Versace. I assume he’s up for awards just based upon the first episode.”

While another couldn’t help but add: “If nothing else, I’m delighted to see Ricky Martin! I’m not expecting a chorus of She Bangs but if it can happen….. #AmericanCrimeStory

A fourth simply wrote: Who knew Ricky Martin could act?

Meanwhile, a second strand of tonight’s episode followed serial killer Andrew Cunanan, 27, played by Darren Criss.

Cunanan had already killed four men in the US when he gunned down 50-year-old Versace on the steps of his Miami home.

The drama is based on a 1997 book by journalist Maureen Orth, who spoke to witnesses claiming Versace met his killer Cunanan in San Francisco nightspot Colossus in 1990.

Penelope Cruz plays his sister Donatella, who gained the keys to his fashion empire after his death.

Meanwhile, the real life Versace family have slammed the producers of the show, including creator Ryan Murphy, for going ahead with the production – claiming that the book it was based on was a “work of fiction” and denied any involvement.

The statement read: “As we have said, the Versace family has neither authorized nor had any involvement whatsoever in the forthcoming TV series about the death of Mr. Gianni Versace, which should only be considered as a work of fiction.

"The company producing the series claims it is relying on a book by Maureen Orth, but the Orth book itself is full of gossip and speculation. Orth never received any information from the Versace family and she has no basis to make claims about the intimate personal life of Gianni Versace or other family members.

“Instead, in her effort to create a sensational story, she presents second-hand hearsay that is full of contradictions.”

At the end of each episode, a title card has been put in place that reads: “This series is inspired by true events and investigative reports. Some events are combined or imagined for dramatic and interpretive purposes.

“Dialogue is imagined to be consistent with these events.”

The Assassination Of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story, 9pm, BBC Two

If you loved The People Vs OJ Simpson, this latest American Crime Story dramatisation will hook you in once more. On 15 July 1997, fashion designer Gianni Versace (played by Edgar Ramirez, right) was gunned down outside his Miami villa by Andrew Cunanan, and while we get an insight into Cunanan’s mind, it’s Versace’s lover Antonio D’Amico (a painfully grief-stricken Ricky Martin) who you’ll feel for most, as he’s treated particularly harshly by both the police and Gianni’s sister Donatella (Penelope Cruz).
